Civil War-era artillery fuzes, housed in the following four (4) packages:
1. Five (5) 12-second paper fuzes in blue waterproofed paper and wood packaging. Front of package printed as follows: "Frankford Arsenal / 1863 / 12 Second Fuzes / To take a fuze from the package, tear the paper at top by raising the piece of tape, and press against the small end of the fuze with the finger."
The package is in very fine, unopened condition.
2. Five (5) 4-second paper fuzes in red waterproofed paper and wood packaging. Front of package printed as follows: "Frankford Arsenal / 1863 / 12 Second Fuzes / To take a fuze from the package, tear the paper at top by raising the piece of tape, and press against the small end of the fuze with the finger."
There is some wear to the bottom and top of the package.
3. Four (4) 40-second paper fuzes in white waterproofed paper and wood packaging. Front of package printed as follows: "Frankford Arsenal / 1864 / 12 Second Fuzes / To take a fuze from the package, tear the paper at top by raising the piece of tape, and press against the small end of the fuze with the finger." Period ink correction replaces "1864" with "1865."
The package is in very fine, unopened condition.
4. 10 (ten) 15-second paper cannon fuzes, wrapped in unlabeled period brown paper and string. Written across front on pencil: "10. 15 sec."
These paper and powder time fuzes would be inserted into the nose of an artillery projectile to delay its explosion for the amount of time as detailed by the packages. A pleasing and patriotic effect is produced by the red, white, and blue Frankford Arsenal boxes - other examples were produced in a range of colors.
