Engraved silver identification badge. Obverse engraved "J. Hume / C / 3d. Ia. V.C." above cast "War of 1861". Original pin and loop to reverse. Approx. 1 x 1 1/2 in.

John Hume of Washington, Missouri, was 21 years old when he enlisted on 24 February 1864 as a private into Company C of the 3rd Iowa Cavalry. The regiment operated in the Western Theater and had seen action at Pea Ridge and the Siege of Vicksburg. After Hume joined, they fought at the Battle of Brice's Cross Roads, Mine Creek (Linn Co., Kansas), Egypt Station, and the Battle of Columbus (16 April 1865) during Wilson's Raid.

A cavalry badge with excellent engraving.
