Engraved silver identification badge. Obverse engraved "Lieut. W.F. Dougherty Co K. 2d. Pa. Cav." above stamped "War of 1861". Original pin and loop to reverse. Approx. 1 1/16 x 1 1/8 in.
William F. Dougherty enlisted on 30 November as a First Sergeant and was mustered into Company K of the 2nd Pennsylvania Cavalry. After initial service in the defense of Washington D.C., they fought at the Battles of Cedar Mountain, Antietam, and Gettysburg. Dougherty was promoted to First Lieutenant on 3 November 1863 and was captured at Charles City Cross Roads, Virginia on 16 August 1864 while the regiment was on provost guard duty with the Army of the Potomac. He was promoted to Captain on 7 September 1864 but was not mustered in.
