A superb United Confederate Veterans group connected to the 2nd Mississippi Cavalry, including:
1. Co. I, 2nd Mississippi Cavalry UCV ladder badge with ribbon. Five-party brass badge with enamel. Printed silk ribbon. 2 x 4 in.
The ladder badge reads: "CO. I. / 2 / MISS / FOL. CAV." with the suspended medal featuring a partly-enameled Confederate flag and the legend "C.S.A. / 1861 x 1865". The silk ribbon is printed "HICKS / POST. / No. 216. / IUKA."
2. m1855 brass duty bugle. Approx. 11 1/2 in. Diam. bell 4 in.
A post-war reunion bugle, attributed with the badge to the 2nd Mississppi Cavalry. Displays a lovely warm, coppery patina.
The 2nd Mississippi Cavalry was formed in the spring of 1862 and fought in the Western Theater. They were first bloodied at the Battle of Iuka and the Second Battle of Corinth, supporting the retreat from the city. They moved to Tennessee by orders of Nathan Bedford Forrest, and took part in the capture of a Federal fort at Brentwood. During 1863, they skirmished in opposition of Grierson's Raid before joining the Vicksburg Campaign.
They faced off with General Sherman's forces in the march to Meridian and then joined the Atlanta campaign, fighting at Columbia, Spring Hill, Franklin, and Murfreesboro. They fought their final battle as part of Forrest's Corps at Selma in April 1865, surrendering with the western theater forces shortly after.
