A collection of 25 CDVs of various Massachusetts Civil War soldiers. A full list of each CDV is as follows:
1. Three-quarter seated studio albumen CDV of a Union captain in civilian clothes. Boston: T.R. Burnham, 1861-1865. Publisher’s imprint to mount recto and verso. Pencil identification to mount verso.
Identified as Charles W. Folsom (1826-1904), a captain of the 20th Massachusetts, who enlisted on 27 July 1861. After being commissioned into the Field & Staff of the 20th Massachusetts upon enlistment as a second lieutenant, Folsom would rise through the ranks during his service. Reenlisting on 27 July 1864, he was eventually promoted and commissioned into the U.S. Volunteer’s Quartermaster’s Department, where he would serve until the end of the war.

Edward R. Merrill was commissioned into Company A of the 1st Massachusetts Cavalry on 21 December 1861. Listed as wounded on 29 November 1863 at Parker’s Store, Virginia, he would later be discharged from wounds on February 15 1864.

Identified as Algernon S. Flagg (c.1823-1893) of Company D of the 34th Massachusetts, Flagg originally enlisted as a captain on 27 September 1862. Shortly thereafter he was commissioned into Company D of the 37th Massachusetts. Though he is recorded as being dispatched due to disability on 14 May 1864, Flagg was commissioned into the US Volunteer’s Quartermaster’s Department on 18 May 1864. After a long career of service throughout the war, Flagg mustered out of service on 10 June 1866.

Horatio E. Macomber (1838-?) enlisted into service as a private on 15 April 1861, where he would be mustered into Company D of the 8th Massachusetts shortly thereafter. Mustering out the same year, he would return to service on 22 August 1862 where he would be commissioned into Company E of the 38th Massachusetts. Macomber would muster out of service for the last time on 30 June 1965 in Savannah, Georgia.

George S. Worcester (1839-1895) mustered into Company B of the 13th Massachusetts on 17 April 1861. He is listed as wounded in action at the Battle of Antietam on 17 September 1962, and a prisoner of war at the Battle of Chambersburg on 10 October 1862. Worcester would continue to rise through the ranks throughout his service, receiving the promotions of second lieutenant, captain and major before mustering out of service on 18 September 1865.

19. Full-length studio portrait albumen CDV of a Union infantryman from Co. B, 44th Massachusetts. Boston: Higgins & Collier, 1861-1865. Publisher's imprint and modern pencil notation to mount verso.
The 44th Massachusetts organized at Readville and mustered in on 12 September 1862. Stationed in New Bern, North Carolina, it first saw action at the Battle of Rawl's Mills. It also participated in the Goldsborough Expedition and the Battle of Washington. By summer 1863, the regiment mustered out on 18 June.

Lawrence (1834-1874) was commissioned into the 1st Massachusetts as a first lieutenant on 26 May 1861. He was then commissioned into U.S. Volunteers Aide-de-Camp on 10 November 1862 as a major. Until his mustering out on 10 July 1866, Lawrence stayed in this regiment where, on 13 March 1865, he was breveted lieutenant colonel, colonel and brigadier general, the last of which he’s identified as in this photograph.

Turner (1836/7-1910) enlisted as a second lieutenant on 22 July 1861 to Company F, 17th Massachusetts. In October of that year, he was promoted to first lieutenant, a rank he held the rest of his service, including his transfer from Company F to G. Two years later, Turner resigned for unknown reasons, mustering out on 25 April 1863.
