Lot of two most excellent Civil War solider tintypes, each with highly desirable patriotic flair. Views includes:
1. Sixth plate tintype. Full thermoplastic case.
Portrait of a proud-looking Union solider with a "parade"-sized American flag stuck on his jacket. The young private also looks to have some kind of large feather affixed to his forage cap.
A very unique photo. Images of soldiers holding flags are always prized by collectors; we have not previously encountered an image where the soldier is "wearing" a flag in this manner. In addition to the wonderful content of the photo, the overall condition of this image is outstanding, particularly the clarity.
2. Sixth plate tintype. Full thermoplastic case.
A patriotic portrait of a double-armed soldier who stands beside an excellent statue of a martial eagle. This impressive statue appears to have been made from plaster or wood and features the eagle clutching a panoply of arms. For his part, the soldier stands a few steps from the statue, perhaps feeling a bit upstaged. The use of statuary in Civil War photography is highly unusual, making this a very rare example.
