A collection of two (2) portraits of Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885).
1. U.S Grant Gen. U.S.A. Lithograph. N.p., n.d. Approx. 10 3/4 x 16 1/4 in. Period ink inscription to lower margin reading: "U.S. Grant/ Gen U.S.A."
A striking lithograph after a photograph taken by Alexander Gardner (1821-1882) in 1864. As a longstanding admirer and eventual student of Mathew Brady (1822-1896), Alexander Gardner captured many memorable views of the Civil War. His popular contributions provided insight into the realities of the bloody struggle the United States was experiencing in the face of its Civil War. While documenting many scenes from the war, Gardner captured the likenesses of the soldiers and generals who were seeing the action firsthand. This particular photograph was taken around the time Lincoln had given command of the Union armies to Grant and remains one of the most popular views of the general during the war. Dressed in uniform and seated in a chair with his arm resting upon it, Grant looks contemplatively off into the distance.
2. Grant. Watercolor portrait. N.p., n.d. Approx. 10 / 13 in. Artist's monogram to recto. Pencil inscription to reverse: "Wash drawing by Day".
A fine watercolor portrait after a photograph of Grant with shoulder boards visible.
