Engraved silver identification badge. Obverse engraved "1st R.I. Cav. Co. C. Sept 16th 1861." Approx. 1 3/8 x 1 3/8 in.
A finely engraved five-point star regimental badge almost certainly commemorating the soldier's enlistment. They spent most of 1862 contesting Stonewall Jackson's cavalry in the Valley Campaign. They served in important roles in many major campaigns, including Second Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg, fighting at Brandy Station. After participating in the Bristone and Mine Run Campaigns, they served in the defenses of Washington D.C. before returning to the Shenandoah Valley, now under the command of General Philip Sheridan.
