Outdoor group view albumen CDV. New York: C.H. Heimburgh. [1863] Photographer's print to mount verso.

An outdoor group view, believed to depict members of New York State Militia during the New York City Draft Riots of 1863. The image shows a large formation of uniformed men assembled in a street before a row of multi-story brick buildings. The men all appear to be in typical military caps and uniforms, with rifles at their sides.

The New York City Draft Riots took place from 13 July to 16 July 1863, in New York City and were sparked by opposition to the Union government's Conscription Act during the Civil War. Many working-class residents, particularly Irish immigrants, resented the draft provision that allowed wealthier men to avoid service by paying a commutation fee. Black Americans were not subject to the draft, as they were not considered citizens, which fueled further racial tensions. What began as protests against enrollment offices quickly escalated into widespread rioting, arson, and brutal attacks, especially targeting Black residents and abolitionists. Federal troops, some newly arrived from the Battle of Gettysburg, were ultimately deployed to restore order. The riots remain among the deadliest episodes of civil unrest in American history.
