A lot with two complete bound runs (except for 1 lacking issue) of issues for the year 1861 from two newspapers published in Morristown, New Jersey, covering secession, Abraham Lincoln's first inauguration, and the start of the Civil War. Items include:
1. The Jerseyman. 52 issues. Whole No. 1779-1830; Vol. XXXIV, No. 721-772. Morristown, New Jersey: A.A. Vance, 5 January 1861-28 December 1861.

2. The True Democratic Banner. 51 issues. Vol. 22, No. 34-48, 50-52. Vol. 23, No. 1-33. Morristown, New Jersey: Louis C. Vogt; Louis C. Vogt & Son, 3 January-11 April 1861. 25 April - 26 December 1861.
Each 4 pages, folio, 18 x 23 1/2 in. Bound (lacking boards, spine remnants only).
An excellent collection of bound newspaper issues from the tumultuous 1861. Beginning with South Carolina's recent secession and the many states that followed, both papers closely follow the events leading to the outbreak of war, including reporting on Fort Sumter, the death of Elmer Ellsworth, and extensive battle reports.
The papers also include articles on Lincoln as he assumed the presidency, his first inaugural address printed in full, and his first Fourth of July address, also in full.
In addition to the political and war reporting, there are several articles reporting on slavery, including first-hand accounts of lynchings and the cruelty suffered by the enslaved in the South.
Notably, the Democratic Banner notes in its July 18th issue that it opposes the Lincoln administration but that "for the last ten years the Democratic party has chiefly labored to uphold the 'Union and the Constitution' against the attacks of fanatics and secessionists, whether of the North or the South."
An excellent grouping that represents the reporting in Morristown during the first year of the war.
