Volunteers Wanted! Come! Come! For the 16th Regiment! Letterpress broadside. Winthrop, [Massachusetts], [June 1861?]. 24 1/16 x 19 1/4 in., framed to 29 x 25 in. Signed in type by S.K. Whitney
A recruitment broadside for the 16th Massachusetts Infantry, signed by its recruiting officer S.K. Whitney. They are encouraged to apply at Winthrop House, one of the residential houses at Harvard University, where the broadside promises, "soldiers will be well cared for."
The 16th was recruited from the greater Boston area and mustered into service on 29 June 1861 for a 3-year enlistment. They saw heavy action throughout the Eastern Theater, including the Second Battle of Bull Run, the Battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor, and the Siege of Petersburg. They mustered out on 27 July 1864 with veterans transferred to the 11th Massachusetts Infantry.
A classic and enthusiastic recruitment broadside.
