Bust-length vignetted albumen CDV studio portrait of Major Andrew J. Hogan. Louisville, Kentucky: Elrod Bros, [1864?]. Verso bears the photographer's imprint and pencil identification "Major AJ Hogan / 114 U.S.C.T."
A. J. Hogan enlisted with the 114th United States Colored Troops on 6 July 1864 at Camp Nelson, Kentucky, as a Major. He presumably served in an earlier regiment, especially given his high rank, but it is not recorded.
After organization, the regiment was ordered to the Department of Virginia at the beginning of 1865 and joined the siege operations against Petersburg and Richmond on the Bermuda Hundred Front until March. They later joined the Appomattox Campaign, participating in the Hatcher's Run, the Fall of Petersburg, the Pursuit of Lee, and were present at his surrender. In June, the 114th moved to Texas and were on duty at Brownsville and other points along the Rio Grande until they mustered out, Hogan among them, on 2 April 1867.
The fine portrait was likely taken around the time of his enlistment with the 114th, before the regiment departed for Virginia.
