A grouping of five (5) stereoviews related to timber and trains, ca. 1860-90s. All on orange mounts. Four taken by Carleton E. Watkins (1829-1916) and one taken by Thomas Houseworth (1828-1915).
Views include:
1. 252. Snow Gallery around Crested Peak, Timbers 12x14 in., 20 in. apart. A man stands underneath the open framework for an eventual train tunnel. This would have been to protect the tracks from the Sierra Nevada snows.
2. 56. Rounding Cape Horn, Road to Iowa Hill from the River, in the distance. A shot from the top of a moving locomotive. The large chimney is actively billowing smoke while the train takes a turn on this northern California stretch of track.
3. 1291. Roof of Snow Covering, Central Pacific Railroad. Like the first image in this lot, this image shows the open framework for the railroad's snow covering, this time from the outside. Mount verso features Houseworth backmark.
4. 299. Truckee River and Railroad at Lime Point, Sierra Nevada Mountains 35 miles distant. An image reflecting the sprawling mountains and valleys surrounding the Truckee River, which flows between California and Nevada.
5. 303. Red Bluffs, looking from the West. Lower Cañon of Truckee River. Another image off the Truckee River, this time along the riverbed inside one of its canyons.
