Situated near Downieville in the prolific Alleghany Gold District of Sierra County, the Oxford Mine was a storied hardrock quartz gold venture that operated intermittently from the 19th century well into the early decades of the 20th century. While 19th-century photography often captured rudimentary placer and hydraulic operations, this archive provides rare, intimate documentation of early 20th-century industrialized deep-vein mining, showcasing the adoption of heavy electrical motors, mechanized ball-mill reduction, and rugged mountain infrastructure in one of California's most rugged mining regions.

Very good condition overall. The prints display strong contrast, dark tones, and crisp focus throughout. The mounts show only minor surface dusting and faint handling wear.
