Single leaf in Cherokee, paginated 81 & 82. From Samuel Austin Worcester and Elias Boudinot, translators. The Gospel According to Matthew: Translated into the Cherokee Language. Park Hill, Oklahoma: Mission Press, [1850?]. 2 pages, 3 1/8 x 6 1/8 in.
Pilling 4221-4224; Sabin 12460.
A leaf from an early publication of the Gospel of Matthew, translated into Cherokee and printed using the Cherokee syllabary developed by Sequoyah in the early 19th century. An accompanying certificate states the leaf came from an 1850 publication; however, a careful examination of the 1850 printing, the fifth edition of the translation, does not precisely align: Chapter XXIV appears on p. 89, not p. 81 as in this leaf. (c.f. digitized copy held at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill). The first edition of the Cherokee translation was published in 1829, with subsequent editions published in 1832, 1840, 1844, and 1850.
