1960 World Champion Pittsburgh Pirates Team-Signed Baseball with Roberto Clemente, JSA
Official Warren C. Giles National League baseball signed by 28 members of the 1960 World Champion Pittsburgh Pirates, including Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente. Additional signatures identified by James Spence Authentication include Dick Stuart, Harvey Haddix, Johnny O’Brien, Tom Cheney, Mickey Vernon, Smoky Burgess, Don Hoak, and Paul Giel, among others. Manager Danny Murtaugh’s signature is identified by JSA as a period clubhouse version.
The 1960 Pirates captured one of the most dramatic championships in baseball history, defeating the heavily favored New York Yankees in a seven-game World Series. The deciding contest ended with Bill Mazeroski’s legendary ninth-inning home run—the only walk-off home run ever to decide a World Series Game Seven. Clemente, then emerging as one of the game’s brightest stars, recorded a hit in all seven games of the Series and would become one of baseball’s most revered figures.
The ball is mounted to a circular wooden presentation plaque bearing a brass plate engraved “PIRATES / 1960 / WORLD CHAMPS.” The signatures exhibit varying degrees of fading but remain substantially legible. The baseball shows expected toning, surface wear, and scattered abrasions consistent with age and display.
Accompanied by a full Letter of Authenticity from James Spence Authentication, certification no. X44742, dated June 6, 2012.
This lot is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Fleischer’s Auctions guaranteeing the signature’s authenticity and providing for a full refund should it fail authentication by PSA/DNA.
