.58 caliber smoothbore. 37" pinned, slightly swamped octagon to round barrel. NSN. Blued and damascened finish, silver mountings, deeply fluted European hardwood half-stock with horn forend cap. Single shot percussion fowler with no rear sight, silver blade front sight, silver thimble and entry pipe and horn tipped wooden ramrod with a jag on the reverse end. Percussion lock is lightly engraved and is simply marked "in Wien" (in Vienna). No makers marks are present. This beautifully executed fowler features a richly decorated barrel with flowing damascened floral patterns and foliate decorations. The side plate, buttplate, triggerguard, ramrod pipes and wrist escutcheon all appear to be silver, although they are not hallmarked, and may be of German silver. The buttplate, side plate and wrist plate are deeply chased and decorated with martial, foliate and classical themes with gilt enhancements. The triggerguard is engraved with foliate and geometric patterns and shows traces of gilt highlights. The butt is fluted in the Italian style and the stock features detailed relief carving around the breech plug tang, stock comb and stock belly between the triggerguard and the entry pipe. A really lovely percussion fowler that likely dates to the 1830s-1840s that was truly stunning when new and still presents extremely well. {ANTIQUE}

Very Good. Bore moderately oxidized and dark with some scattered roughness. Metal with faded blue and much of the gilt damascene decorations intact, showing some thinning, fading and wear. Markings remain clear. Lock may be reblued. Lock remains mechanically functional. Stock good with some damage and repairs, notably a well repaired break through the lock mortise and belly of the stock, a crack along the lower edge of the butt and some cracks in the forend. Most of the carving remains crisp and sharp, as does the butt fluting. Wood with some traces of old added finish and some spots of alligatoring. Otherwise the wood shows the usual assortment of scattered bumps, dings and mars.
