Quarter Plate hand-tinted post-mortem ambrotype. [1863]. Full leatherette case. With accompanying period note reading: "Charles Bostwick Marshall / taken after death / Son B.F. and C.H. Marshall."
A sensitively posed post-mortem portrait of Charles Bostwick Marshall, who died in July 1863 in Alabama. He is arranged on a hand-tinted quilt-covered couch with his father's kepi placed in his hands.
Charles was the son of Benjamin F. Marshall (1810-1885) and Caroline Howard Marshall (1820-1870) of Mobile, Alabama. Two men named Benjamin F. Marshall served in Alabama regiments during the Civil War, one as a private in Company D of the 1st Alabama Light Artillery Battalion and the other a private in Company K of the 40th Alabama Infantry. Although the latter also bears "F" as a middle initial, an extant picture showing a teenager and not a 40-year-old man likely rules out this candidate.
A tender post-mortem portrait with a sensitive connection to the subject's father serving in the war.
